For Tunable White, wattage alone is not enough. Two colour channels are mixed, and available brightness changes with colour temperature and controller logic. Define the colour temperature of the brightest scene first, then check the maximum luminous flux at that point. Higher colour temperatures often look brighter than lower ones at the same measured lumen value.
A 4W+4W Tunable White spot such as the TILLUME Expert 81061M04 is a special case. It should not be treated as a normal 4W room option or as a conventional 8W spot.
2Fixed CCT dimmerabile o Tunable White?
| Se vuoi… | Parti da |
|---|---|
| choose one fixed colour temperature and control brightness only | Fixed CCT with dimming + lumen/lux calculation |
| control colour temperature and brightness dynamically | Tunable White + controller logic + available lumens at each colour temperature |
Fixed CCT dimmerabile è adatto quando:
- the desired colour temperature is clear, e.g. 2850K warm white or 4000K neutral white;
- la stanza deve soprattutto diventare più luminosa o più attenuata;
- il sistema deve restare efficiente, prevedibile e più semplice da cablare;
- sono previsti corridoio, bagno, zone giorno generali o aree funzionali definite.
Tunable White è adatto quando:
- lo stesso ambiente richiede atmosfere diverse al mattino, durante il giorno e la sera;
- camera, soggiorno, zona pranzo o home office useranno il controllo scene;
- KNX, DALI DT8, Loxone o un altro sistema controllano insieme temperatura colore e luminosità;
Lighting design also works with layers: general lighting, accent lighting and additional or functional lighting. TILLUME LED spots mainly provide broad general light.
- General lighting: overall room brightness, often using wide-beam ceiling spots.
- Luce d’accento: targeted light for pictures, shelves or niches. Narrower optics are better than broad 60° illuminazione generale spots.
Use maximum lumens because the system must reach the target lux value at full brightness. In everyday use it will usually be dimmed down depending on the scene.
| Stanza / zona | Valore pratico | Nota |
|---|---|---|
Esempio: un soggiorno di 12 m² with 150 lx basic lighting needs about 1800 lm. With 600 lm per 6W spot, that is roughly three spots. In a bright room with white walls and normal ceiling height this can work well; dark surfaces, timber ceilings or 3 m ceiling height may require more spots, 8W spots or additional light layers.
Esempio cucina: 10 m² with a 400 lx target needs about 4000 lm. With 800 lm per 8W spot, that is about five spots. In practice, the worktop may still need under-cabinet lights, LED strips or carefully placed spots. A layered concept is often best: spots provide general light, LED strips add direct light on the work surface.
5Valori indicativi per stanza: 6W o 8W?
At the same target illuminance, 6W and 8W lead to different planning approaches. 8W spots need fewer light points and can create more depth and contrast. 6W spots usually need more light points but create calmer, more even illumination. Both approaches can be correct.
| Stanza / zona | 6W approach | 8W approach | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hallway / entrance | more 6W spots for even orientation | fewer 8W spots possible | I corridoi traggono vantaggio da una luce uniforme. |
| Bagno | 6W per luce generale in molti bagni | 8W se serve più luminosità | Mirror lighting should be separate. |
6Caso speciale 81061M04: perché 4W+4W non è automaticamente uno spot 8W normale
The TILLUME Expert 81061M04 is a special 4W+4W Tunable White spot with 2200–6500K. It should not be planned as a general 4W spot for small rooms and not as a conventional 8W spot.
| Operating logic | What happens? | Planning meaning |
|---|---|---|
| DALI DT8 / Wattage Balance / constant-power logic | The controller typically keeps total power relatively constant while colour temperature changes. | Plan it as about a 4W class: approx. 310 lm at 2200K and approx. 420 lm at 6500K. |
| MDT AKD-0424R with Max wattage output | When mixing from 2200K toward 6500K, the second channel can be driven more strongly. | In the middle range around 3500–4000K, both channels can be close to full power; approx. 8W / 720 lm may be possible. |
| 2200K or 6500K endpoints | Mostly one channel is active. | Do not expect full 8W output at the endpoints. |
This behaviour must not be transferred to other TILLUME Tunable White spots. Other 6W+6W or 8W+8W models are not automatically intended to run both channels permanently at full power.
7Progettazione del sistema 24V: alimentatore, controller e riserva
In a 24V LED spot system, planning does not end with watts per spot. 24V DC power supply, controller channel, cable length and spot must fit together.
Total spot load = number of spots × watts per spot
Recommended PSU power ≈ total load × 1.2
That equals about 20% reserve. A blanket 50% reserve is usually not required in normal projects and can lead to oversized power supplies. A 24V DC power supply should still not be operated permanently above its rated power.
TILLUME 24V power supplies offer two relevant advantages: adjustable output voltage to compensate realistic cable losses in correctly planned installations, and internal design reserve at rated load. This does not mean the rated power may be exceeded permanently; it means the installation has more practical tolerance for cable losses and operation at nominal load.
Also check: maximum power per LED controller channel, number of channels for Tunable White, PWM frequency and dimming behaviour, cable length, cable cross-section, room groups and whether the Tunable White controller uses Wattage Balance, constant power or a special mode such as MDT AKD-0424R Max wattage output.
8Caduta di tensione e tensione minima in ingresso
With longer 24V cable runs, total power is not the only issue. The input voltage directly at the spot also matters. Every cable causes voltage drop. If too little voltage reaches the end, a poorly planned 24V system may become visibly dimmer.
TILLUME 24V LED spots contain internal constant-current regulation. As long as the input voltage at the spot does not fall below the specified minimum, the internal driver can supply the LED stably. This makes the system more tolerant of realistic cable losses, but it does not replace correct planning of cable cross-section, cable length and power supply.
| Criterion | Expert Series | Master Series |
|---|---|---|
| Typical focus | efficient 24V LED spot modules for KNX/DALI/Loxone/PWM systems | higher light quality, more natural spectrum, better colour rendering |
| Power classes | 6W and 8W; 81061M04 as special 4W+4W case | 6W and 8W |
| Light output | depending on model approx. 360–800 lm; 81061M04 separately | depending on model approx. 410–800 lm |
| Best reason to choose | system efficiency and smart-home compatibility | colour quality for wood, food, skin tones and textiles |
Master is not simply “brighter”. The better reason for Master is light quality: stronger colour rendering, a smoother spectrum and stable thermal behaviour, especially with wood, food, skin tones and textiles. Relevant spot families can be found in the 24V LED Spots Expert Collection.
10Errori di progettazione frequenti
- Errore 1: 8W is always better than 6W. 8W gives more reserve and needs fewer points, but in small rooms it can cause glare or islands of light. 6W with more points often looks calmer and more even.
- Errore 2: choosing spots only by watts. Watt is electrical input. Planning needs lumen, target lux, beam angle, room area and light distribution.
- Errore 3: planning a cucina like a soggiorno. Cucinas and work surfaces often need higher lux values and additional functional light such as LED strips.
- Errore 4: treating 4W+4W as a normal 8W spot. With 81061M04, usable output depends strongly on controller logic.
- Errore 5: choosing the PSU too tightly. A 24V DC supply should not run constantly at its limit; about 20% reserve is a better practical rule.
11Checklist decisionale
- Quale superficie e quale livello lux target sono previsti?
- Are the surfaces bright or dark?
- How high is the ceiling?
- Should the spot provide general light, zone light or accent light?
- How many spots fit mechanically and visually into the ceiling?
- Is Fixed CCT with dimming enough or is Tunable White required?
- How many lumens does the spot deliver in the desired colour-temperature range?
- How much power can the controller channel provide?
- How large must the 24V DC power supply be with about 20% reserve?
- How long are the cable runs and what cable cross-section is used?
- For 81061M04: is MDT AKD-0424R Max wattage output really used?
